I’m in my early 20s, and I’ve always wanted to be a real estate agent. I kmow someone who does it part time, but we live in New York State. Even though the economy is bad and is affecting the real estate market, isn’t a good time to get in the business if there are so many foreclosures? Because of buying homes cheaper than the orignal price? But, then again the banks aren’t giving out a lot of loans…Is there anything that is prospering related to real estate right now? Probably commercial real estate, but I would have to college for it, right? I went for Business, and Marketing. So, I don’t think I would be able…
Are there locations in the United States that are doing better in real estate? People still need homes in this economy. And what other things could I do related to being an agent, that will help me still be able to sell and buy homes??? I need some ideas…

If you are a buyer’s agent – now is a good time for that because people who can buy are buying.
If you are a seller’s agent (where you make the lion’s share of your $$) it sucks because if you own a home you don’t want to sell when its value is low because you the owner lose $$.
It’s all what you make of it.

Okay let me explain something…
Real estate is a sales job. Its that simple. I hired for banks for real estate positions including commercial real estate. Did I look at where they went to college? Hell no. I recruited those freaks that try and sell your perfume and cologne in the parking lots. Those are sales people I can teach them the rest.
I give you an example (this is a real example that was tested). You take one of the top Real Estate Agents, Insurance Agents, Car Salesperson, or Dude that sales you shoes. Then you switch their jobs. Guess what? They will be in the top 10% of whatever job you give them. Doesnt matter as long as its sales.
As per real estate, there is no problem right now. I had my best year last year and I will have a better one this year. Remember 5% of the agents make 90% of the money. If you suck at sales then that leaves you in the 95% that make 10% of the money.
So dont worry about the market, if you can sell ice to eskimos then its your job. If you cant. Pick something else.

Im in almost the same exact situation as you. I am 19 years old with my real estate license working for tracey real estate in brooklyn. I also go into school part time too.
Now the real estate market is bad even in NY, but sooner then other citites in the country, the NY market will go up and I am getting all the training and experiance I need now to do well when real estate is booming again. Im going to estimate in 2-3 years the pick up will being and I will have enough experiance to make alot of money either with residential or commercal
